Man Accused Of Killing Wife Turns Himself In

Walter J. Lowe showed up at the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office on Saturday afternoon.

SNELLVILLE, GA — A 51-year-old man accused of shooting and killing his wife late Thursday has turned himself in to police.

Walter J. Lowe arrived at the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Department at about 3:40 p.m. Saturday and was booked without incident, according to Gwinnett County Police.

According to police, Lowe and wife Erica Powell, 46, had been fighting Thursday. The couple was recently married, but had been together for several years, said police spokeswoman Cpl. Michele Pihera.

Investigators say that one of Powell's children, a 10-year-old boy, had been in and out of the home all day Thursday. He returned at about 9 p.m. to see Lowe, his stepfather, leaving the house. He didn't notice anything suspicious at the time, police said.

At around midnight, he went to check on his mother and found her suffering from a gunshot wound. He then called 911. Police responded and tried to revive Powell, but were unsuccessful.

Lowe had active warrants for aggravated assault, felony murder, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

While on the run for two days, he was believed to be armed and dangerous. On Friday, police provided multiple reports detailing times they've been called on Lowe in the past. Charges in those cases ranged from terroristic threats to assault and battery to criminal trespass.
