South Gwinnett Principal: No Lockdown or Fire at School

Social media reports earlier in the day Thursday said a fight occurred and a "soft lockdown" was in place

South Gwinnett High School’s principal sent a letter to parents clarifying incidents at the school, answering reports there was a lockdown and fire Thursday.

Simply put, Prinicipal Eric Thigpen said despite reports on social media, neither occurred.

Thigpen wrote in the letter (see the entire letter below):

“In terms of the report of a fire on campus, we did have a faulty fire alarm that went off while it was being repaired. In addition, we had two students who pulled two fire alarms located in hallways. While these alarms created a disruption, there was never a fire and our students were never in any danger. As for the reported lockdown, we did have two fights-- one involving two boys and another involving two girls-- that school staff addressed. We did receive police support in the form of School Resource Officers and our partners from Snellville City Police in our response as charges were filed against the students.”

Earlier in the day, Snellville PD sent out a Nixle advisory that were was a “soft lockdown” at the school. A little more than an hour later, the department posted on Facebook that ”SGHS is not on lockdown at this time.”

Thigpen said in the letter: “At no time were we in a lockdown as it was not necessary because the situation was under control.”
