Police said the teens are accused of theft and aggravated assault.

Two juveniles were taken into custody after they unknowingly tried to sell a stolen handgun back to the owner.

According to an Athens-Clarke County Police news release, a Sandy Spring man reported his handgun was stolen from his car while it was parked on Cole Ridge Court Sunday morning, Nov. 30. The theft happened between midnight and 10 a.m.

As the man was standing outside with friends and about to call police around 10 a.m., two teenage males approached them and asked if anyone wanted to buy shoes.

An officer responded, took down information for the incident report, and left the scene before the juveniles returned with the gun, police said. The officer was still in the area when a gunshot was reported around 11 a.m. at the Cole Ridge location.

Police said the investigation indicated the man confronted the teenagers about the stolen gun and a fight ensued, during which the gun went off. No one was injured.

The two males, ages 15 and 16, were arrested and charged with aggravated assault and entering auto.
