Walton Sheriff Shares Letter From a 5th Grade 'CHAMP'

The CHAMPS program aims to educate fifth graders on life skills, safety, avoiding peer pressure, internet safety and the like.

LOGANVILLE, GA -- Walton County's sheriff is sharing around a letter he got from a CHAMP.

"How much fun for us was receiving this letter?" reads a Thursday post on the sheriff's office Facebook page. "These are the things that keep us doing what we do."

The letter, shared in a photo on the post, is a thank-you note from a fifth-grader involved in Walton County's CHAMPS program.

Started by the Georgia Sheriff's Association in 2003, CHAMPS is designed to educate fifth-graders on life skills ranging from avoiding drugs and resisting peer pressure to practicing safe internet behavior.

About 1,500 fifth graders participate each year at elementary schools all over Walton County.

But not all of them take the time to sit down and say thanks, like a student named Albert Brown did.

His letter came in after a recent CHAMPS trip to Six Flags.

Its entire text reads:

Dear Walton County Sheriffs Department,
Thank you so much for the CHAMPS trip to Six Flags last Tuesday. It was very fun. I loved all of the rides, but especially the Super Man. It was awesome! Thank you for taking time out of your busy day to take all of us. Thank you for every thing all of you do to keep Walton County safe. We all had a blast thank you again for taking all of us. Also, thanks for breakfast at Kellie's and lunch. I sure am glad that Sheriff Joe Chapman started the CHAMPS program. (And also won the election!) Sincerely, Albert Brown.

That last bit got a special nod in the sheriff's office Facebook post.

"Sheriff Chapman should be very worried," it read. "This kid might be some serious competition someday."
