3 Killed In Cobb Crashes Sunday Morning

The violent crashes, including one involving a bicycle, happened between midnight and a little after 3 a.m. throughout Cobb County.

MARIETTA, GA — Three people were killed and at least one was badly injured in three separate car crashes in Cobb County in the early-morning hours on Sunday.

At about 3:15 a.m. Sunday, two people were killed on Interstate 75 northbound at Earnest Barrett Parkway when a Jeep rolled over, ejecting the two people who were in it, according to police. According to Cobb County Police, the 25-year-old driver of the Jeep Wrangler was speeding when he lost control.

The Jeep flew off of the roadway, hit a guardrail and started spinning. It then rolled over, police say, throwing the driver and his passenger, a woman, out of the vehicle. Both were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Earlier, at about 12:43 a.m., an SUV was also speeding when it flew off of the road and hit a utility pole, according to police. A 31-year-old man was driving the 2002 Chevy Suburban "well above the posted 45 m.p.h. speed limit" on Powder Springs Road at Anderson Farm Road, police say.

The driver was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police also are waiting to release the driver's name until family has been notified.

Then, at 2:07 a.m., a man riding a bicycle was hit by a car in Acworth.

Cobb Police say Patrice F. Weaver, 45, of Acworth, was riding the bike southbound on Lake Acworth Drive north of McLain Circle. They say the bicycle was not equipped with lights or reflectors.

Gregory L Sbaldigi, 32, of Kennesaw was driving a 2007 Nissan Titan the same direction. Police say he tried to swerve and avoid Weaver, but the front of the Nissan hit the back of the bicycle. Weaver flew onto th ehood of the Nissan before hitting the pavement and rolling onto the grass shoulder, police said.

Weaver, who police say is suspected of having alcohol in his system, was taken to Kennestone to be treated for his injuries. Neither Sbaldigi nor his 8-year-old daughter, who was in the passenger seat, were injured, police say.

Charges are pending against Weaver.

Anyone with information in any of the crashes is asked to contact the Cobb County Police Department’s STEP Unit at 770-499-3987.
