Accused Cop Attempted Sex With 12 Year Old: Warrant

MARIETTA, GA — A Cobb County Police officer already accused of slapping and choking a mentally disabled woman during sex now faces charges that he attempted to have sex with that woman's 12-year-old niece.

Police announced Thursday that Robert Lanier New now faces felony criminal solicitation and felony computer pornography charges. He already had been charged with aggravated assault after a woman police say has the mental capacity of a 10-to-14 year old came forward saying he choked and slapped her during sex.

According to his latest arrest warrant, New, 46, repeatedly sent sexually graphic text messages trying to get the woman and her niece to have sex with him. The messages were sent from May 31 to June 12, according to the warrant.

New, who has been with Cobb County Police since 2005, is being held at Cobb County Adult Detention Center without bond and has been placed on administrative leave with the department.

On Monday, he was arrested on charges that, in March, he had sex with the mentally disabled woman at his home on Hawkins Store Road in Kennesaw. He choked the woman and slapped both sides of her face so hard that she cried, the report claims.

The woman was "shaking due to fear" during an interview with detectives, the warrant said. She told detectives that she couldn't tell New to stop because he was choking her.

New also sent the woman threatening text messages, according to the warrant. "I am in charge, I am in control," he wrote in one, it said.
