Special Delivery: Cobb Officer, 911 Dispatcher Save Baby Born Roadside

A Cobb County police officer and 911 dispatcher jumped into action when a baby who was not breathing was born roadside.

COBB COUNTY, GA — A police officer and 911 dispatcher are being credited with saving a newborn baby born roadside but not breathing in Cobb County.

When a male driver approached Cobb County Police Officer William Desaussure, police on Tuesday said it was because his wife was in active labor.

Police did not say when or where this happened, but East Cobb News reported it happened Thursday at Sandy Plains Road near Whitlock Road.

The man told the officer they would not make it to the hospital, and police said shortly after, the Preston family welcomed a newborn. However, the infant was not breathing, police said.

“I’m out here with this lady," Desaussure told a Cobb County 911 dispatcher only identified as CTO Madison. "She just delivered. The baby is not breathing. I need to know what to do.”

She calmly gave Desaussure CPR instructions, ensuring the safety of both the officer and the baby "through a chaotic and critical moment," Cobb County 911 said.

Desaussure then started chest compressions, and police said after several of them, the newborn began breathing.

Emergency medical workers took the mother and baby to the hospital, and they have since been released, police said.

"This was truly a team effort from a quick thinking father, to the steady voice of our 911 dispatcher, to Officer Desaussure’s immediate action on scene. And most importantly, mom did the hardest job of all. Her strength in that moment made everything else possible. Congratulations again to the Preston family on their beautiful new addition," police said.
