Fabric Painting Your Area Rug?

Learn an easy and quick technique to add a coordinating color from your color palette to your area rug.

By Jan Britt

I love sharing the unique decorating ideas that I come up with for my client's. Also, I want to share decorating ideas that I see at my client's house, with their permission of course. My student Sheri Dobbs came up with a clever idea that I wanted to share with you. She took fabric paint and "colored" red within the lines of the square to make sure her area rug color coordinated with her sun porch.

See the attached picture to be able to view the small squares within the area rug.
There are little lines within her area rug that she “colored". Sheri said the fabric paint that she used worked well and it did not run or bleed, I thought it was a great idea.

I would not do this on a brand new or expensive rug. You never know about the
fiber from one rug to another. The paint could bleed or spread if the rug is
made out of certain types of fiber. I think this decorative method would be
beneficial to you if you use caution. Consider going to a yard sale or resale
store to find an area rug. I appreciate that Sheri allowed me to share this
idea with you. It sure did work great for Sheri's rug!
