The Department of Justice was asked to investigate the deaths at the detention center by Cobb County District Attorney Joyette Holmes, who lost her bid for re-election earlier this month. Democrat Flynn Broady defeated Holmes and has criticized her handling of investigating the deaths at the detention center.
In August, Broady issued a statement of the handling of the deaths in August. In it, Broady said that “being arrested should not be a death sentence and Cobb County has waited long enough for real change.”
