Cobb Deputy Saves Inmate From Tragedy: Sheriff
Authorities say a Cobb County deputy making his security rounds may have stopped a suicide attempt by an inmate.

MARIETTA, GA — A Cobb County deputy is being recognized after authorities say he may have prevented the suicide of an inmate on Feb. 6 at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center.
Deputy Jose Mejia was making his routine security rounds in a mental health housing unit with Investigator Pedro Munoz when he noticed an inmate with a "bed sheet tied tightly around his neck," according to the Cobb County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday.
Mejia immediately intervened and removed the sheet, potentially hindering a "seemingly inevitable tragedy," authorities said.

“Our mission extends beyond confinement," Cobb County Sheriff Craig Owens said in a news release. "It includes care, oversight and ensuring that everyone in our facility is protected. Moments like this reaffirm why that mission matters. We commend Deputy Mejia and Inv. Munoz for setting the example and reinforcing the standards that protect lives every day inside our facility.”
Authorities say Mejia's actions mirrors the sheriff's office's professionalism and accountability. The condition of the inmate was not immediately available.
