Decks and More Wins National Remodeling Award for Marietta Home

Decks and More (www.decksandmore.biz), an Atlanta-based remodeling company, has won a national Contractor of the Year (CotY) Award from NARI, the National Association for the Remodeling Industry. Decks and More received the honor in the category of Residential Addition Under $100,000 for a sunroom and deck addition to a Marietta, Ga. home. The award was presented at NARI’s annual meeting in April.

“This was an extremely rewarding remodeling project from concept to completion, and my team and I are very happy to have won the national CotY award for our work,” said Frank Pologruto, president of Decks and More. “The homeowners wanted a dramatic and functional sunroom and deck addition to their home that blended perfectly with the existing architecture and incorporated as many green features as possible. We came up with several creative solutions to overcome some of the challenges of the project, and the homeowners were thrilled with the final results.”

The assignment called for Decks and More to convert an existing rear deck into a fully-finished sunroom with a ductless heating and air conditioning system and a panoramic view of the backyard. The remodeling team created a custom design that incorporated three large picture windows along with skylights to take advantage of natural light and to enhance the view. Energy-efficient features included LED recessed lighting, Pella Low E (emissivity) and Argon Gas windows and tight insulation around all windows and framework. To further reduce waste, the original deck’s floor framing was kept intact, while unwanted scrap lumber was donated to a local non-profit, Reclaim It Atlanta.

“One of our challenges was raising the enormous 6x8 foot picture window into place,” said Pologruto. “We built a skid onsite, and used pulleys to maneuver the window up the skid and into the frame. We also worked very hard to match the existing roofline with the sunroom’s new roof for a seamless effect. Decorative enhancements included a tile floor with a border, a bead board ceiling with custom framing and exterior corbel brackets on the deck and stairs which were handcrafted onsite.”

The CotY Awards are given out annually by NARI. Remodelers from seven regions across the country submit entries which are judged on problem solving, functionality, aesthetics, craftsmanship, innovation and degree of difficulty. The regional winners then compete for the national awards. This year, there were 160 regional winners and 36 national winners.

The Marietta home was also a regional CotY Award winner, and Decks and More received a second regional CotY Award in the category of Residential Addition Under $100,000 for a home in Roswell, Ga. For this home, Decks and More created a new two-color exterior deck with LED Post Cap lighting and a TimberTech black aluminum composite railing system.
