Here are the top three stories in Marietta today:
- A family in nearby Kennesaw is preparing a funeral for their teenage son who died when trying to help a friend who fell into a frozen lake last week. The first boy who fell into the lake survived. Konen Troy, who passed away, is being remembered as a hero. A GoFundMe has been setup by the family to help pay for expenses. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
- The Calvary Children's Home in nearby Powder Springs is in need of Christian couples who are willing to serve as relief houseparents. Houseparents provide care to children at the long-term care home who can't get support from family. (Subscription: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution)
- A recent study of salaries for police officers in rural Southwest Georgia led to the study committee issuing several recommendations to the state. The study suggested creating a law enforcement bachelor's degree, providing incentives, and increasing pay where available. The Cobb County Police Department was one of the agencies cited as trying new techniques to fill about 100 jobs through the use of better wages and benefits. (Chattanooga Times Free Press)

- The Cobb County Government shared an update on the three county facilities that were damaged by water from burst pipes last week. The West Cobb Senior Center reopened partially on Wednesday, Jan. 4. The C. Freeman Poole Senior Center and Vinings Library Branch will both remain closed until further notice. (Press Release Desk)
- The recycling schedule in Marietta might be a little off this week. For recycling not picked up on Wednesday, the city plans to pick it up this morning. For those on the schedule for recycling pickup today (Thursday), you can expect pickup to be postponed until tomorrow on Friday. (City of Marietta, Ga., Government via Facebook)
