Marietta Girl Scouts give Barktown Dog Rescue dogs something to call their own

To earn the Girl Scout Silver Award, two Marietta Girl Scouts assembled "foster kits" for Barktown Dog Rescue foster dogs.

Two Marietta Girl Scouts have given several dogs possibly their first gift ever.

Working to earn the Girl Scouts Silver Award, the highest honor a Cadette Girl Scout can receive, Jori Miller and Josie Dunlap, both of Marietta, reached out to Barktown Dog Rescue (BTDR) (http://www.barktowndogrescue.org/) and, through research and discussion with the rescue group, chose to put together "Foster Kits," kits a new BTDR foster dog would be given to get started with the essentials.

The girls garnered the support of local businesses, their community, friends and families in assembling the 30 foster kits, each equipped with a size-appropriate collar, leash and toy. They also included a package of dog treats, dog food samples and hand decorated a special picture frame for the foster parent to have a lasting memory of the dog they helped on their journey to a forever home.

“The result of their hard work blew us away,” said Kim Murphy, co-founder of BTDR. “The dogs that come into our rescue come with nothing, they have nothing to call their own. Besides our group providing a loving foster home, this is the best welcome present we can give them. We are grateful to the girls for these very useful kits that will help make our foster dogs feel loved.”

Publix, Kroger and Help Us Help Animals (HUHA) were among the community supporters in this effort.

About Barktown Dog Rescue
BarkTown Dog Rescue and Sanctuary is an all-volunteer IRC 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. It envisions a compassionate world where all dogs reside in responsible, loving homes. Dogs in the rescue’s care are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and receive all appropriate veterinary care and treatment that is needed. The dogs are placed in nurturing foster homes while they await placement into their permanent home. The rescue group remains interested in and committed to the welfare of the dogs beyond the adoption process. The group’s goal is to help dogs in distress without regard to age, breed, size, or ease of placement. To the extent finances allow, dogs in the greatest need take priority. Finally, the rescue group strives to work with area shelters and other rescue groups to develop a network of supporters and volunteers to create a better world for homeless dogs.
