Marietta Names New Police Chief

The Marietta City Council Wednesday unanimously approved to make Marty Ferrell the city's new police chief.

MARIETTA – Marty Ferrell is the Marietta Police Department's new police chief.

He moves up into the role from being the interim police chief.

City officials said the extensive, nationwide search for a permanent police chief ended Wednesday when the Marietta City Council unanimously approved City Manager Bill Bruton's recommendation for Ferrell to hold the position.

“Today is an incredibly special day for me. I’m completely humbled and honored to be selected as Marietta’s next police chief. I am grateful to the mayor, City Council and city manager for placing their trust in me to lead the great men and women of MPD," Ferrell said in a news release.

"The City of Marietta is my home, and I have deep roots in this community that I love. I look forward to partnering with our citizens to continually enhance our quality of life in Marietta through ongoing community policing efforts.”

According to the city, Ferrell has been with the police department since 1990. He has served in the investigative, uniform patrol and support services divisions.

Ferrell has had special assignments in the Marietta-Cobb-Smyrna Narcotics Task Force and served as commander of the MPD Special Weapons and Tactics Team, city officials said.

He has bachelor's and master's degrees in criminal justice from Columbia Southern University, city officials said. Ferrell graduated from the FBI National Academy, session 202, and from the Police Executive Research Forum’s Senior Management Institute for Police.

“It was a great honor to be able to recommend Marty Ferrell to become our next chief of police,” Bruton said in a news release. “Chief Ferrell has a long and distinguished career of dedicated service to the Marietta Police Department and the greater Marietta community. His appointment continues the tradition of exceptional leadership for one of the best police agencies in the State of Georgia.”
