Marietta Neurologist Pens Book of Poems in Honor of His Late Wife

Proceeds from the sale of the book "Quarter-Peeled Oranges" benefit the greater Atlanta affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Quarter-Peeled Oranges a book of poems written by Marietta neurologist Bruce Gillett, is a love story written in poetry form as a tribute to Gillett’s late wife, Dale, who courageously fought advanced breast cancer for 17 years and lost her battle in 2010.

After a chance meeting at an art exhibition, the author chose to collaborate with Bill Needs, a Marietta vocational rehabilitation counselor, to provide the illustrations for the book.

Quarter-Peeled Oranges is published by Southern Lion Books, and all proceeds from its sale benefit the Greater Atlanta Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Quarter-Peeled Oranges began as grief-writing, enabling Gillett to begin to heal after his wife’s passing. The author’s writings evolved into a memoir of sorts, with each poem recalling a place in time, beginning with the couple’s first date.

“The illustrations of verse transform the narrative into vivid images while placing the reader into their own remembrances and dreams,” said Gillett. “The oscillations of mourning and healing are chaotic, yet hold all of the true story…and the reason the book’s sections are organized by feelings, not by chronology.”
