Metro Atlanta Inmate Escapes

The inmate, who was being held in Rome, was incarcerated on opiate and methamphetamine charges out of Clayton County.

ROME, GA — An inmate on a work detail in northwest Georgia has escaped, according to authorities.

Sean Powell, an inmate in Floyd County, was working with a crew at Eastview Cemetery in Rome when he walked off, the Georgia Department of Corrections announced Monday morning.

Powell is described as a white male, standing 6 feet tall and weighing about 165 pounds. He was last seen wearing a white jail outfit.

According to the department of corrections website, Powell, born in 1994, was incarcerated at Floyd County Correctional Institution. He was serving time for the possession of narcotic opiates and had a release date of June 29, 2019.

Previously, he was charged in 2014 and 2015 in Clayton County for possession of opiates and possession of methamphetamine.

Rome is about 70 miles northwest of Atlanta. Clayton County is just to the south of Atlanta.

Anyone who encounters Powell is urged not to approach him and to call 911.
