New IKEA Opening In Marietta

The second metro Atlanta location of the Swedish home-goods store will be about 15 miles from the Midtown location opened in 2005.

MARIETTA, GA — A second metro Atlanta location of Swedish home-goods store IKEA is opening in Marietta, the city and company announced.

Twelve years after the company's hugely popular location in Midtown opened, the company announced it plans to build on a 34-acre site west of Interstate 75, between the Marietta Parkway and Delk Road interchanges.

The property is part of the Franklin Gateway Corridor property that the City of Marietta purchased for development in 2015. IKEA will join the likes of Atlanta United FC's soccer training facility and The Home Depot Technology Center at the site.

IKEA has not released an estimate on the number of jobs the 338,000-square-foot store will create. But, in a news release, the company said noted that in addition to the "hundreds that will be employed during the construction phase, hundreds of coworkers will join the IKEA family when the new store opens."

The company has not yet announced a time frame for construction to begin or the store to open.

Marietta officials say no tax incentives were offered to bring the store to town.

"I am both honored and delighted today to continue to bring the message to the City of Marietta that Franklin Gateway is open for business," Mayor Steve Tumlin said. "This international company, with locations in 49 countries, will offer a positive shopping experience for both Marietta residents and visitors alike, thus bring with it a positive impact on Marietta."

The IKEA Marietta store will be built on the site of the former Marquis Place apartment complex, which the city purchased through a 2013 Redevelopment Bond in July 2015, and an adjacent property consisting of six acres for a total footprint of 34 acres.

Founded in Sweden in 1943, IKEA sells home furnishings known for their design and relatively low prices. There are, to date, more than 392 IKEA stores in 48 countries, including 46 in the United States.
