Trooper Shot After Cobb County Chase; Massive I-75 Traffic Jam Follows

Jacob Fields is expected to make a full recovery.

MARIETTA, GA -- A Georgia State trooper was shot late Wednesday afternoon after a police chase ended in Cobb County.

The incident began when Trooper Jacob Fields, a three-year veteran, attempted to pull over 26-year-old Israel Vladimir Rodriguez of Acworth for speeding at I-75 southbound and Chastain Road, according to WSB-TV. Rodriguez sped off, resulting in a chase that went on for about 10 miles.

Other troopers got involved in the chase. Rodriguez allegedly rear-ended a car at I-75 and Delk Road, then got out of his vehicle and exchanged fire with state and Cobb police.

Fields was struck in the abdomen and arm. The Georgia Department of Public Safety confirmed Rodriguez was also shot.

Fields was taken to Kennestone Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. No details have been made available on the extent of Rodriguez’s injuries. He is facing charges of aggravated assault on Fields and the other officers who were involved in the chase.
