Roaches, Mold Found At Diner In Marietta

The 24-hour diner scored a failing 62/U on a recent health inspection.

MARIETTA, GA — Inspectors found roaches in a walk-in cooler, climbing the cooler walls and inside a holding unit for baked goods at a 24-hour diner in Marietta this week.

Delray Diner, at 245 Delk Rd., scored a failing 62/U on the inspection on Tuesday. Small insects also were found in more than 10 bags of bulk pasta, according to the inspection report, and all three ice bins had mold growing inside them.

An employee was seen using a cellphone while washing dishes and going from handling dirty dishes to clean dishes without washing hands. Food containers were uncovered, the grill and ventilation hoods over it had grease buildup and containers in the cake-prep area had food debris, chocolate and "other food products" covering container lids, the report said.

There was no hot water at a hand sink in the kitchen, the drain in another had sink was clogged and two sinks had leaks, inspectors reported.

The score was the worst that Delray Diner has gotten on recent reports, but those weren't spotless, either. The restaurant scored a 70/C on an inspection in March and an 88/B on one in April.

According to state policy, the restaurant will be inspected again within the next 10 days. If the problems from the original inspection have not been addressed, the inspectors could temporarily shut the restaurant down until they are fixed.
