Shopping Center Evacuated Due To Possible Bomb In Marietta: Police

A person was taken into custody in connection with the incident, police said.

MARIETTA, GA — A shopping center in Marietta was evacuated Saturday due to a possible bomb in the area, according to police.

Shortly after 8 a.m., authorities received a 911 call about a pickup truck parked near the East Gate shopping plaza carrying a potential bomb or explosive device, Marietta police said. Officers made contact with the vehicle's owner, determined the threat to be serious and took the person into custody, according to police.

The plaza and immediate area were evacuated and the Cobb County police bomb squad responded, police said. The FBI was notified, as was the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, according to police.

A device was removed from the truck and secured around noon, police said, adding authorities were not yet sure if it was an explosive. The rest of the vehicle was being searched and the area was expected to reopen by 3 p.m., according to police.
