Three Marietta Students Earn AKA/Pearl Scholarships

Local chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha and Pearl Foundation award $15,000 to 11 college-bound Cobb seniors.

Rho Zeta Omega, a local chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority over the weekend awarded $15,000 to 11 Cobb County seniors as part of the organization's annual scholarship reception. The awards, presented Saturday at the Home Depot Support Center, were made in conjunction with The PEARL Foundation.

Mariah Nuckles of and T'Keyah Duke and Elizabeth Cleaver, both of, were among the 11 young women who earned the scholarships.

The scholarship program is part of the Alpha Kappa Alpha legacy of providing financial assistance to young women who wish to pursue a post-secondary education. As part of the selection process, the chapter considered academic acheivement, leadership and community awareness.

Cobb County School Board Chairwoman Alison Bartlett served as a featured speaker at the reception and encouraged the seniors to remember to give back to the community.

“There are many paths open to you," Bartlett said. "Just remember not to close the doors; leave them open. And, the biggest path of all is to continue to serve your community.”
