YWCA Clear Winner of Saturday's 5K and Skirt Run

What if they ran a race and no one won? Or perhaps, no one knows who won because everyone was having too much fun and laughing too hard to keep track?

That appears to be what happened on Saturday with the 1st Annual Y Not Run and 1 Mile Skirt Run as part of a benefit to the YWCA. The 5K ran without a hitch. But then the Skirt Run participants -- and, yeah, everyone of all genders donned skirts or other wild apparel -- got their start at the 5K finish line.

Members of the Rotary Club of Marietta, which sponsored the race, could not quite figure out who won the race on Saturday afternoon. Some said former councilwoman Holly Walquist won the race but she distinctly remembers YWCA President Holly Comer and Rotary President Mark Barbour both crossing the line before her.

Dawn McEachern said no one seemed to take note of the winner, especially since the race staff has stopped timing and tracking the event after the 5K.

"It is terrible that nobody knows who the woman was who technically came in first," McEachern wrote to Marietta Patch amid a series of humorous email messages. "What we can say is that Mark Barbour was the first skirt-wearing participant to cross the finish line."

But the bottom line: The race had more than 300 registered participants and at least 50 volunteers helping with the cause ... and enjoyed every minute of it.
