UPDATE: Atlanta Police Release Names of Officers Involved in Wednesday Shooting

The suspect was carrying a firearm at the time he was shot, police and witnesses said.

UPDATE (4:35 P.M.): Atlanta police have released the identities of the two officers involved in the Wednesday shooting of an allegedly armed man.

Officers Sean Fagan and Jimmy Alvaran shot 22-year-old Yuric Ussey in the Mechanicsville neighborhood after police said Ussey pointed a firearm at them. Witnesses allegedly told police that they saw Ussey with the handgun before the shooting occurred.

Atlanta Police Chief George Turner said during a Thursday morning press conference that the handgun Ussey was allegedly carrying was reported stolen last year. Turner added that his officers had taken more than 450 weapons off the streets during the first 14 weeks of the year.

Police said Thursday afternoon that Ussey was on probation for a charge of theft by receiving stolen property.

ORIGINAL STORY: Atlanta police say that a man shot by officers in Mechanicsville on Wednesday was armed and pointed the gun at officers.

According to an official statement released on Thursday, officers in Zone 3 were called to 585 McDaniel St. at approximately 7 p.m. in reference to a man walking in the middle of the road. The man, identified by police as 22-year-old Yuric Ussey, took flight when officers arrived.

During the foot chase, it was determined that Ussey was carrying a handgun; the police statement says that witnesses at the scene told investigators that they saw Ussey with the gun. According to police, Ussey pointed the weapon at two officers, causing them both to open fire on him. Ussey was shot “an undetermined number of times,” but was not killed.

Police say that Ussey is being held on two counts of aggravated assault against a Peace Officer, two counts of Obstruction of Law Enforcement Officer, one count of Possession of Firearm During Commission of a Felony, one count of Possession of Firearm of First Offender Probationer, one count of, Carrying Weapon without a License, and two counts of misdemeanor Obstruction of Law Enforcement Officer.
