Insuring the Uninsurable
Ron Racca wants to insure Atlanta residents living with chronic diseases, one patient at a time.

Ron Racca found a career that allows him to spend his day talking to people and changing their lives. A native Bostonian, Racca now lives in East Atlanta Village but works out of Midtown, selling life insurance policies to individuals who are often ignored by major insurance companies. Racca is an independent agent but he works for Securus, an insurance company that specializes in end of life (often referred to as death) insurance. Securus though is also one of the few insurance companies to sell policies to individuals living with cancer and HIV.
When he heard about this company, he knew he wanted to work here.
“This is the type of company I want to represent,” Racca said.

Racca, who lives with his partner in the East Atlanta Village, opened his branch out of the Midtown area because he believes the insurance that he sells will benefit many people in the area. Midtown has long been the center for the LGBT community in Atlanta. Racca hopes to get the word out to individuals in the LGBT community and other Midtown residents who are living with HIV that they can now purchase life insurance.
“I just felt that this would be beneficial to people in the community,” Racca said.

Racca donates a portion of his commission to AIDS Atlanta and is passionate about insuring those who may not think that they qualify for insurance.
“I am so happy that somebody recognized that these people need insurance too,” Racca said.
Racca has always loved to talk and to be out in the community with friends and neighbors. He came to work in the insurance business after a long path through careers that he was successful in but fell out of love with for one reason or another.
Racca received his BS in political science from Suffolk University. After graduation, his father wanted him to be an attorney but Racca had other plans.
“I had no desire to be an attorney,” Racca said.
Instead he went to work for a tech company where he became the second youngest supervisor in the company’s history. But it wasn’t long before Racca decided that the corporate life wasn’t for him.
“I just wasn’t meant for the corporate world,” he said.
From there he went into politics, working on political campaigns for a number of politicians but this career lost its’ luster as well.
“I worked for a lot of politicians in my time and I liked it but I just saw a side of it that just turned me off completely,” Racca said.
After leaving politics, Racca went to sales and eventually began working in the real estate business where he could escape the cubicle while working out in the community to help others. This passion would carry over to the insurance company when Racca moved to Atlanta, found Securus and began meeting people in their homes to offer them whatever insurance coverage they can afford, whether nearing the end of their lives or carrying chronic illnesses.
“I enjoy talking to people, I like going out, I like meeting people,” he said.
His current job allows him to do just that and for Racca it’s a blessing.
“I like being my own boss, I like myself as an employee and I like me as a boss,” Racca said. “I’ll never fire myself.”
