Sinkhole Causes Traffic Snare in West Midtown

Crews were filling the sinkhole on Wednesday morning, but rush hour traffic may still be affected by the incident.

Crews are working to fill a large sinkhole which opened in West Midtown on Wednesday morning, a development which will undoubtedly cause traffic delays on the homeward commute.

According to WSB-TV, the 25 foot by 10 foot hole opened up on Northside Drive near 8th Street, which shut down two southbound lanes of traffic on the busy thoroughfare. WSB-TV said that workers were pouring concrete into the hole by 11 a.m. Wednesday. The Georgia Department of Transportation’s GA511 web portal claims that repairs will be finished by 4 p.m., but it is unknown whether or not that estimate remains accurate.

Sinkholes have become a problem in Atlanta in recent months; in August, a sinkhole opened up on West Wieuca Road in Buckhead, near Piedmont Park, after heavy rains. The sinkhole was repaired in early September, but a further round of storms re-opened the sinkhole on Sept. 12.
