Alone on Thanksgiving? At Least You Get the Leftovers.

Are you going to be alone this Thanksgiving, due to circumstances beyond your control?  Hey, it might not be so bad.  Actually it can be kind of nice.

The holiday season is full of retailers telling you that you can’t enjoy a Thanksgiving unless you have family to share it with.  You’ve seen the TV commercials that prey on your emotions.  Remember the Publix commercial last year where the teenage daughter comes home from college to spend Thanksgiving with her family, and her little brother could care less?  Then he finally admits that he missed her?  Kleenex alert!

So you think you’re alone on Thanksgiving Day.  Actually, you’re not.  Thanksgiving is supposed to be about giving thanks for all that you have.  So who do you give thanks to?  God, right?  God is with you on Thanksgiving (even though you can’t see Him or ask Him to pass the turkey).  So you’re really not alone.  Thanksgiving is a day to reflect on the blessings that you’ve been given, no matter what bad hand life may have dealt you.  For me, it’s like a “God Appreciation Day.”

So enjoy your day with God however you want to!  You can cook whatever you want (lasagna, anyone?), watch whatever you want on TV (even if it’s not football), fall asleep on the couch and not feel guilty, and best of all, you get ALL the leftovers all to yourself!

And if you’d like to give thanks to God throughout the rest of the year, join me on Sundays for worship at First Presbyterian Church of Monroe (www.fpcmonroe.com).
