How Did Walton County Score in New State School Performance Ratings?

Walton County Public Schools scored above the state average in a new performance rating system that assesses whether schools are producing students ready for college.

The state Department of Education released the first results, which are based on 2011-2012 data, from the new College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) on May 7. It considers achievement, progress, and the achievement gap using a 100-point scale, and replaces Adequate Yearly Progress used in No Child Left Behind.

On May 7, the Georgia Department of Educationreleased its first Georgia College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) that measures elementary, middle and high schools on a 100-point scale.

According to a press release, "the CCRPI is the new accountability system that replaces the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) measurement in Georgia."

The department stated that the average score for Georgia’s elementary schools is 83.4, middle schools is 81.4 and high schools is 72.6.

“I am very pleased that we now have a school improvement measure as in-depth as the College and Career Ready Performance Index,” said State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge in the release. “We are no longer bound by the narrow definitions of success found in the Adequate Yearly Progress measurement. Holding schools accountable and rewarding them for the work they do in all subjects and with all students is critical in preparing our students to be college and career ready.”

Understanding the Score:

Each school receives a score out of 100 points, just like as students receive in their classes.

A school and district’s overall score is made up of three major areas: Achievement (70 possible points), Progress (15 points possible) and Achievement Gap (15 points possible).

In addition to the three major areas, schools may receive additional points based on the number of economically disadvantaged students, English-learning students and students with disabilities that meet expectations.

Schools and districts also receive extra points for exceeding CCRPI targets.
