It All Works Out The Way It's Supposed To.

My family and I go to First Presbyterian Church of Monroe (www.fpcmonroe.com).  We have an awesome pianist at FPC.  Harriet can play the socks off anything.  She can improvise a song like it’s nothing; the music just rolls off her fingers.  Together with our church choir she provides our church with some awesome Sunday sounds!

But Harriet was out sick today – the first time in many years that she was unable to make it to the church.  Well, I guess she’s entitled to a sick day now and then.  But with her absence I realized just how much we depend on the piano to help us sing praises to the Lord on Sunday mornings.

When our choir director warned us that we’d have to sing a cappella today, a wave of fear washed over the faces in the pews. Pastor George reminded us that centuries ago many  churches didn’t utilize musical instruments; all hymns were sung a cappella.

I don’t think God cares if we have a piano or not.  I don’t think He cares how off-key some of us sing.  I think what matters is that we were all there at church this morning and that our church service was just as relevant, even without a pianist to accompany us.

It was eerily quiet during those times during which the piano usually plays.  You could hear a pin drop during Communion.  But I didn’t mind – it was a good, quiet time to reflect on why we were supposed to be there in the first place.  I think we all heard what we needed to hear today.

I always try to remember that when it’s in God’s hands, it works out the way it’s supposed to.  And if the pianist doesn’t make it to church, just sing anyway.  It sounds just as good to God.
