Walton County Hit Hard By Thursday Storms

Walton Fire Rescue said it is sending info to the National Weather Service to see if the Mt. Vernon area was hit by a tornado.

The severe weather in Walton County Thursday afternoon knocked down power lines and trees, and authorities are wondering if a tornado also touched down.

Walton County Rescue posted several photos of storm damage on Facebook Thursday evening; hardest hit was the Mount Vernon area. At least two severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for Walton County late in the afternoon by the National Weather Service.

The Walton County agency said there were no reports of injuries, but there was plenty of damage. Fallen power lines shut down Snows Mill Road from Hwy. 83 to Jim Daws Road near Monroe. Parts of Jim Daws and Bethany Church roads also were shut down for a time after the storm hit.

One poster on Facebook shared this:

“I was on 78 at The Store when a wall of water hit and I couldn’t see. Construction signs were flying. Finally turned and parked in front of Mt Vernon church because of debris flying and the church was blocking it. It was scary. I thought it was a tornado because everything was fine and then it was a wall of water and you couldn’t see.”
