“All the amputations appear to be healing, but she is still being monitored closely,” David Martinez wrote on Facebook. He said his wife is in the ICU unit at the Augusta hospital, her third hospital.
Cindy Martinez, who went to the emergency room at Gwinnett Medical Center on May 25 complaining of severe pain in her shoulder, was diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis and myositis, caused by flesh-eating bacteria. Doctors have not been able to determine how she contracted the bacteria.

On June 25, after already enduring several operations, doctors amputated parts of her legs, an arm and fingers of the remaining hand.
In the Facebook update, David Martinez said both of Cindy’s legs were removed below the knees, her right arm above the elbow and all of the fingers on her left hand below or at the last joint.
“The next step for Cindy would be a rehabilitation center to learn basic movements and functions,” David Martinez wrote.
“Cindy and I thank everyone for your prayers and continued support through this journey. Seeing many people come together has allowed Cindy, our two children, and I to manage our lives a little better and focus on each other. Cindy is ready to come home, but has more recovery ahead of her. The kids pray for mom to come home. As for me, I know everything is in God’s hands and I pray that HE continues to guide me in the right direction.” -- David Martinez
