The family reported hearing a "boom" and feeling their house shake, according to the Gwinnett fire department.
PEACHTREE CORNERS, GA — Lightning from a Friday evening thunderstorm caused a house fire that damaged a home in Peachtree Corners.
Firefighters responded at 7:38 p.m. to a report of a house fire in the 4000 block of Yarrow Bluff. Occupants of the home and neighbors reported the fire to 911 as a lightning strike. The occupants were home at the time and reported hearing a loud boom and feeling the house shake.
A strong thunderstorm was moving through the area at the time, according to Gwinnett Fire & Emergency Services spokesman Capt. Tommy Rutledge.

The family escaped and there were no injuries.
Crews found heavy fire in part of the second floor and attic of the two-story house. Firefighters attacked with hoses and entered the house to fight the blaze, but were forced out due to intense fire conditions and a partial roof collapse.

Crews managed to knock down the bulk of the fire before going back in to finish the job.
"This fire is an example of the intense power and energy of a lightning strike," Rutledge said.
Fire officials advise anyone who suspects a lightning strike to check the attic and basement of their home. If you see smoke or flames, evacuate immediately and call 911.
If you find no damage to your home, they advise looking around to see if a neighbor's house has been hit.
"This family did the right thing by recognizing the emergency and getting out fast," Rutledge said. "We are fortunate that no injuries were reported."
