• Proposed Quitman budget would cut police staffing (wctv.tv) — Quitman city leaders are weighing a 2026-27 budget proposal that would cut the police department from 17 positions to just eight, sharply reducing salary and benefit costs. Officials say the change is part of broader efforts to fix long-running audit and accountability problems that have drawn state scrutiny, even as residents and lawmakers watch closely to see how public safety and services might be affected.
   

• Education Briefs June 8 (valdostadailytimes.com) — Area colleges are celebrating spring 2026 graduates and honor students, including Georgia State University dean’s list honoree Kamariya Lawrence of Quitman. From UNG and Georgia Military College to South Georgia State and Georgia State, dozens of South Georgia students are being recognized for strong GPAs, advanced degrees, and academic honors that reflect well on their hometowns.
