Aquaponics Lab Debuts At River Eves Elementary School

Former Atlanta Mayor and U.S. Ambassador Andrew Young will visit the lab on Friday in Roswell.

ROSWELL, GA -- River Eves Elementary School is installing an aquaponics learning laboratory to broaden experiential STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) lessons for students in all grades.

Through the aquaponics lab, which was custom-designed for the school to replicate the lifecycle of fish and plants in the nearby Chattahoochee River, students will engage in inquiry-based projects and lessons.

The school’s staff, students, parents and River Eves Education Foundation supporters will meet Dr. Ryan Cox, founder and CEO of HATponics, at River Eves on Friday, Feb. 10 as he reveals the first-ever installation of a river system in a school.

Former Atlanta Mayor and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Andrew Young will join Dr. Cox for a visit from noon to 12:30 p.m. to see the new lab. An open house for the general public will be held from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Ambassador Young believes aquaponics is an organic low-cost, low-water use and low waste producing solution to providing more food in a short amount of time to solve world hunger, the Fulton County School System said.

Aquaponics is a hydroponic-aquaculture system where waste produced by fish supplies nutrients to plants grown hydroponically, which purifies the water for the fish.

“After a lengthy search for the right addition to our STEM curriculum, we’re excited to dedicate a classroom for aquaponics with turtles, bluegill, bass, and plants for experiments and study,” said Principal Neil Pinnock. “It’s equally exciting to kindergarteners through fifth graders and teachers to develop eco-awareness and additional problem-solving skills through aquaponics.”

River Eves Education Foundation provided funding for the new lab.

River Eves became a STEM-certified school in 2015, the first Fulton County School to achieve this designation, and has earned numerous accolades, including two Reward School Titles for Highest-Performing Title I School.

The school is located at 9000 Eves Road in Roswell.
