Artists Prepare To Face Off In 'Slammin' in the Suburbs'
The popular spoken word contest will be held Feb. 11 as part of the 15th annual Roswell Roots Festival.

Roswell, GA --The Roswell Roots Festival will once again present its popular Slammin’ in the Suburbs event next week at the Roswell Historic Cottage.

The free event, set for 7 p.m. Feb. 11, is hosted by M. Ayodele Heath, an award-winning poet that has been featured at venues including the National Black Arts Festival, Nuyorican Poets Café, Turner Trumpet Awards and Turner South’s My South Speakstelevision campaign.
This event includes some of the region’s best spoken word artists who compete in a three-round format. The judges are selected from the audience and are instructed to judge on content and performance value. A $1,000 cash prize will be awarded to the first place winner.

The doors will open at 6 p.m., where limited spots will be available for amateur poets to enter the Slam. The Slam rules will be explained by Heath before the competition begins. Each poem must be of the poet’s own construction and props and musical accompaniment is prohibited.
Roswell Roots: A Festival of Black History and Culture is one of the largest and most comprehensive celebrations of black history and culture in the Southeast.
This year there will be 23 different events throughout the month of February ranging from music and art exhibitions to demonstrations and poetry. The festival continues to grow and was honored with the “Gold Award for Best Cultural Event” by the Southeast Festival and Events Association in 2014.
