Children's Book Author Visits River Eves Elementary

Patrice McLaurin's book was recently selected by Microsoft as one of their "Books to Inspire STEM".

From River Eves Elementary: River Eves Elementary School was proud to host Patrice McLaurin, author of Have You Thanked an Inventor Today?, on Feb. 21st, as part of its curriculum that prepares students for 21st Century workplace careers in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

McLaurin’s book was recently selected by Microsoft as one of their "Books to Inspire STEM” and a great match for the school that is dedicated to teaching students about STEM to develop their awareness of engineering processes and potential career fields.

Have You Thanked an Inventor Today? is a beautifully illustrated children’s book about inventions that we use every day. What’s more, students learned that many things which we take for granted – the components in cell phones, street lights, peanut butter, hair brushes, lunch boxes, guitars, potato chips, and the Super Soaker water gun – were created by African-American men and women, which is a timely lesson during African American History Month.

McLaurin spoke with students in all grades and answered questions, including the root of her inspiration to write the story: “My inspiration is children.” She explained that when considering an invention, one didn’t need to think about designing something made from scratch. Inventions can also be something that is improved versions of what already exists, such as the electric pencil sharpener.

“Patrice’s story complements the River Eves STEM program by inspiring our students to tap into their own creative thoughts and become innovators.” said Principal Neil Pinnock. In fact, McLaurin’s parting remark to the children was just that. “You are never too young to use your imagination to create something great!”
