First Centennial HS Girls' JROTC Raiders Take Third at North Forsyth Competition
Team challenges combine a series of events that are as mentally demanding as they are physically demanding.
Ever thought of participating in the Ninja Warrior competition? That is what cadets sign up for at a JROTC Raider Meet. Team challenges combine a series of mentally and physically demanding events, such as the cross country rescue (first aid skills and the litter carry), one-rope bridge, map reading, ammo can relay, tire flip, Humvee pull, obstacle course and team runs. For the first time in its history, Centennial High School has enough women in the program to make up an All-Female team and they earned 3rd place overall out of six female teams at the North Forsyth Raider Meet on September 10, 2016. The All-Female team also won trophies for placing 1st, 2nd or 3rd in three of the six event categories.
“Roughly 40 students out of 100 in our Army JROTC program compete in Raiders,” said Retired Lieutenant Colonel Jon Nepute, who teaches the program at Centennial High School. A Raider Team typically consists of ten members with one serving as the team leader. Each school can enter three teams into any Raider competition. “We are pleased to see the depth and diversity of our program growing.”

Raider Team training builds dedication and determination by challenging the participants in practical hands-on applications that increase physical fitness, build self-confidence, develop leadership, and inspire teamwork. The activities also develop healthy competition among other programs and schools. “We are proud that Centennial is the only high school in the Northeast Learning Community to offer the three-year elective Army JROTC Career Pathways program to its students,” said Principal Kibbey Crumbley. “The program is a strong fit with our overall goal of helping students build life skills to become college and career-ready.”
