Is Montessori Education Becoming A "Trend?"

Village Montessori School will host an open house Jan. 10 at its campus in Roswell.

Whether or not you have young children, you have most likely heard the buzz about Montessori education.

In the last year, the method has made headlines on NPR and CNN and in Psychology Today and Forbes among other news outlets. While the recent attention may make Montessori seem like a hot new trend, it is actually quite the opposite. Italian physician Dr. Maria Montessori began developing her educational method in 1897 and opened her first classroom shortly thereafter. Well over 100 years later, educators are still celebrating the merits of Montessori.

Perhaps the new spotlight is due in part to the huge success of Montessori graduates. Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos have all given credit to their Montessori beginnings.

Entrepreneur and author Peter Sims said, “The Montessori educational approach might be the surest route to joining the creative elite, which are so over-represented by the school’s alumni that one might suspect a Montessori Mafia.”

Montessori education focuses on whole-child development. Children are respected and given freedom within a carefully prepared multi-age classroom environment. At Village Montessori School in Roswell, they are directed by expert teachers who encourage curiosity, creativity, and challenge, leading each child to develop a sense of intrinsic pride.
