River Eves Elementary Named Environmental School of the Year

Keep Roswell Beautiful awarded the school with the award for its ongoing partnership with the city for green efforts.

River Eves Elementary School was named the Environmental School of the Year by Keep Roswell Beautiful.

The school won the award during a program held at The Mill Kitchen and Bar on April 28. Keep Roswell Beautiful credits the selection to the school’s ongoing partnership with Roswell for its STEM education, Adopt-A-Stream program, students’ certification in water testing, commitment to recycling and project-based learning work with city of Roswell engineers and other efforts.

In addition, this summer, talented and gifted teacher and STEM committee member Gayl Struletz will participate in a program focusing on science and the environment at the University of Georgia’s Costa Rica campus.

Struletz was selected for the trip by The Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center as part of its STEM partnership with local schools. She will tour coffee and chocolate plants and visit a rainforest to collect bugs. Struletz is the only teacher from Fulton County Schools in the 10-person group.

“I look forward to this incredible trip and using this experience in my classroom next year,” she said.

Principal Neil Pinnock added he was honored the school ”is providing environmental education and earning accolades.”

“Everyone in our school can take pride in their roles that earned us this distinction from KRB,” he added. “The study of rivers, streams, water pollution and reclamation taught by Mrs. Struletz engages our students and leads to other exceptional opportunities, like her selection to study in Costa Rica.”

River Eves Elementary, located in Roswell, has earned numerous accolades, including the Reward School Title for Highest-Performing Title I School in 2012 and 2013 (top 5 percent). Keep Roswell Beautiful selected the school above all public and private schools in Roswell for its award.

Keep Roswell Beautiful is a 501(c)3 organization that collaborates with the city of Roswell and whose mission is to educate, motivate and empower the citizens and businesses of Roswell in the beautification, conservation and preservation of our environment.
