The classroom had been unusable for the past few years due to damage caused by a fallen tree, but with the help of many organizations in the community, the facility will now “enrich the learning environment” for students at neighboring Roswell North Elementary School, the city said.

Mayor Jere Wood and members of the City Council held a dedication ceremony Sept. 3, and were joined by teachers and students from the school, the Roswell North Elementary Foundation, Keep Roswell Beautiful, the Roswell Recreation and Parks Department and the Recreation Commission.

The renovation project was an initiative of Roswell North Elementary’s Outdoor Learning Task Force. The RNE Foundation’s Board of Trustees spearheaded the project, granting $4,300 to provide a contractor.

Keep Roswell Beautiful helped clear privet, an invasive plant species that had grown over the existing classroom, and the Roswell Recreation and Parks, Historic and Cultural Affairs Department provided staff to assist with the project.

The outdoor classroom also includes a trail and access to a stream where students can learn first-hand about aquatic science, erosion and the movement of water.

“We’re very excited about the partnership we’ve formed with the city of Roswell Recreation and Parks Department and Keep Roswell Beautiful to implement the renovations to the outdoor classroom,” said RNE Foundation President Michelle Vincent. “We’re all thinking big about how we can enhance educational opportunities for our students and make our parks and schools work together to enrich our community.”
