Roswell Leaders Approve Makers Space At Old Fire Station

ROSWELL, GA — The Roswell City Council has approved an initiative that would allow an organization to use a vacant fire station create a community workshop where creatives can explore their talents. City leaders at their Jan. 22 meeting authorized the city administrator to sign a contract with Atlanta Maker Alliance to open a makers space at the vacant station at 1601 Holcomb Bridge Road.

The Alliance wants to use the space for members to work on projects, and to introduce technology, art and science learning sessions to the city.

The contract calls for the city renovating the outside and inside of the old fire station to accommodate the company's plans, a project Roswell estimates will cost $112,550. Atlanta Maker Alliance has agreed to make aesthetic changes to the interior of the building, if the group deems that to be necessary.

The site, which will be named Roswell FireLabs, will house community workspaces where you can experiment with arts and crafts, technology and science while "sharing tools, ideas, and expertise with other community members," the group said on its Facebook page.

"They are powerful learning communities where 'makers' work, learn, teach, innovate, and explore a wide array of projects and subject areas across every discipline," Roswell FireLabs added.
