The arrests follow a three-month statewide investigation conducted by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes Unit (CEACC) and the Georgia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

As a result, 24 search warrants were executed on Wednesday in 16 Georgia counties, the GBI said in its press release.

Law enforcement officers conducting the searches were looking for evidence of distribution of child pornography using the Internet.

This statewide endeavor, known as Operation Secret Guardian, started in July and centered on GBI agents, along with local and federal Georgia ICAC Task Force affiliates, detecting child pornography images being shared using the internet.

Over the course of the operation, 69 digital devices were examined and 232 digital devices were seized as evidence.

Evidence and information obtained during the execution of the search warrants led to the arrest of the following 18 suspects:

  1. Earl Benson, 68, Dawsonville, GA, contract employee
  2. Joseph Brantley, 36, Waynesboro, GA, land survey company employee
  3. Jeremy Converse, 37, Dallas, GA, tow truck driver

  18. Colby Harrison Waldroup, 23, Monroe, GA, unknown

Those arrested were charged with violating the Georgia Computer Pornography and Child Exploitation Prevention Act of 2007.

The GBI notes additional charges may be forthcoming. Furthermore, investigators say additional arrest warrants have been issued, and other arrests may occur after analysis of seized digital devices.

Georgia ICAC Commander and GBI Special Agent in Charge Debbie Garner praised the hard work of the entire Georgia ICAC Task Force during the operation.

“The investigators who work child exploitation cases are some of the most dedicated law enforcement officers there are, despite the psychological toll this type of investigation exacts on them,” Garner added.

The Georgia ICAC Task Force is comprised of more than 200 local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, other related criminal justice agencies and prosecutor’s offices.

Created by the U. S. Department of Justice and managed and operated by the GBI in Georgia, its mission is to assist state and local law enforcement agencies in developing an effective response to cyber enticement and child pornography cases.
