Roswell Police To Carry Naloxone To Fight Drug Overdoses

The generic form of Narcan, Naloxone can be used to temporarily reverse an overdose from heroin and other opioids.

ROSWELL, GA -- Officers with the Roswell Police Department will soon have another tool they can deploy to save lives and protect the public.

The Roswell City Council on Monday unanimously approved equipping officers with Naloxone, the generic form of Narcan, the antidote used to reverse the effects of an overdose from opioid use.

The price tag for the purchase is $7,500.

City staff members note the Fulton County Commission approved partial initial funding for the purchase. Since the drug has a relatively short shelf-life, the city notes there will be a recurring annual expense of dosages up to $7,500.

The Roswell Fire Department will provide training, serve as the "pharmacy" for the police department and update all city public safety protocols for the use of Naloxone, the city said.
