Roswell Police To Educate Motorists on 'Move Over' Law

This week, the Roswell Police Department will conduct a public campaign informing residents about Georgia’s Move Over Law.

The Move Over Violation Education (M.O.V.E.) & Enforcement Detail will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1 and Wednesday, Sept. 2.

The operation will take place westbound along S.R. 140/Holcomb Bridge Road between Dunkin Donuts (1590 Holcomb Bridge Road) and Wells Fargo (1490 Holcomb Bridge Road).

Georgia’s Move Over law was enacted to protect first responders, wrecker operators and highway maintenance personnel who routinely work in the roadway.

More police officers die in the line of duty from traffic crashes than any other cause. More than a quarter of those officers are killed from being struck by vehicles while working outside of their patrol cars. All first responders and personnel who work in the roadway are vulnerable.

As recently as Aug. 1, Georgia Department of Transportation HERO operator Moses King was critically injured when a driver struck him on I-75 in Atlanta as he assisted with another vehicle accident.

The law has been officially named the Spencer Pass Law, in honor of HERO operator Spenser Pass, who who was struck and killed on Interstate 85 in 2011.
