ROSWELL, GA -- A Roswell woman accused of driving under the influence nearly plunged into a retaining pond while a child passenger was in her vehicle.

Roswell police have charged Erica Voriese Nelson, 31, with DUI less safe, failure to maintain lane and child endangerment, police records show.

The accident was reported around 8:54 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23 in the 4000 block of Declaration Drive, which sits off Scott Road near Holcomb Bridge Road.

Roswell police spokesperson Lisa Holland said a concerned resident called 911 to report a vehicle "backed up into a ditch" and woman and juvenile were seen walking away from the car.

That car, Holland stated, backed up off the road into a ditch and hit a wrought-iron fence.

"The car was caught by the fence, preventing it from falling approximately 40 feet into a water retention pond," she added. "The tires were hanging over the wall."

Holland stated police located Nelson in the parking lot of a nearby Kroger shopping center and was charged in connection to the case. The child's father, she added, was called to the scene to collect the juvenile.

However, Holland said the 12-year-old was taken to an area hospital for a complaint of an injury.

Nelson was booked into Roswell's detention center.
