SAR Piedmont Chapter 2018 Highlights for the Year!

The SAR Piedmont Chapter celebrated their 25th Anniversary and George Washington Birthday on February 21, 2019 with 72 people attending! The night was very special with honored guests from all six SAR Chapters that the SAR Piedmont Chapter help charter in the state of Georgia. Their speaker was Larry T. Guzy (Past SAR National President 2017- 2018) who was also one of their Piedmont Past President’s who gave a great speech on Piedmont’s early history along with Piedmont charter members Eric Thorntenberg and Phillip Meyer. Their chapter was presented with a “Proclamation from the State of Georgia State” for their 25th Anniversary by Roger Wise Jr. a North Fulton Ambassador. And GASSAR President Scott Collins was there to present to their SAR Piedmont Chapter eight GASSAR awards including the “Distinguished Chapter Award” for 2018.

• The SAR Piedmont Chapter had a GREAT YEAR in 2018 and together they won the Distinguished Chapter Award with 12,216 Americanism points and Georgia SAR President Scott Collins presented the award, along with others on February 21, 2019.
• The SAR Piedmont Chapter started their year in January 2018 with 74 members and ended the year with 93 members, which exceeded our goal. Thanks to Jaime Ruff and others.
• The Piedmont Chapter did 37 Traveling Trunks programs at many area elementary schools. So around 1845 elementary kids got to see history items of the American Revolutionary War. And I would like to thank our SAR Piedmont presenters like Rick Reese Jr., Paul Prescott, George Thurmond and Bob Sapp for taking their time to teach these students this history of our country.
• They supported DAR and CAR programs by having Rick Reese Jr attending several of their meetings and by doing join events together like tonight’s meeting with DAR Regent Mary Williams.
• They supported our Youth programs with 26 Eagle Scout presentations thanks to Jaime Ruff and 7 ROTC / JROTC presentations thanks to Rick Reese Jr and George Thurmond. We had 36 Americanism Poster entries with Rick Reese Jr. help and had 36 Middle Schoolers join in on our SAR Brochure Contest. Also George Thurmond is organizing the American History Contest for us.
• They awarded several students with grants and scholarships like we will be doing to night thought the 2018 year.
• We supported our Veterans by collecting clothing, books and items of need, thanks to George Thurmond and other chapter members.
• We were there at the graves ceremonies of both Mike Ruff (Jaime Father) and for Billy Holcombe. Thank you Roy Greene for helping organizes that for us.
• Our Piedmont Color Guard of (Paul Prescott, Bob Sapp, George Thurmond, Rick Reese Jr. and Mark Anthony) were active in the following events along with many of our SAR Piedmont members attending too: Events like Cowpens in January/ Kettle Creek in February / George Washington’s Birthday like we are doing tonight in February / Memorial Day in Roswell in May / Flag Day in June / July 4th events / Old Soldiers Day in August / Constitution Week in September / Kings Mountain in October / Veterans Day in November / Wreaths Across a America in December. Then every quarter our Color Guard is there to presents the colors at the INS meetings where new US Citizens inducted. Thank you very much Color Guard!
• Rick Reese the third did an excellent job taking photographs of all of these events, then he published and wrote the articles up for our SAR Piedmont “PIPER” quarterly newspaper! Thank you Rick!
• We had more than several our Piedmont members attending our National SAR Leadership Meetings in Louisville KY both Spring and Fall meetings and at our National SAR Congress meeting in Texas. We also have several our members at all the Georgia SAR meetings throughout the year.
• We had great speaker at each our monthly meetings which help us attract new members, but also helps keep the interest with our current members. Averaging 25 members per meeting. Thank you Roy Greene for these great speakers for us.
• We made several contributions to charitable causes to a tune of around $3800. Causes like…the SAR Foundation / Wreaths Across America and the George Washington Endowment Fund.
