SAR Piedmont Chapter Helps to Plant Liberty Trees Long-Lasting Tributes to Celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the United States
The SAR Piedmont Chapter, Georgia Society, Sons of the American Revolution located in Roswell, Georgia, created its Liberty Tree Project in 2018 to honor the upcoming 250th Anniversary of the United States locally. When the program was shared with leadership from the National Society, Sons of the American Revolution, it was decided to make the program a nation-wide program under the leadership of SAR Piedmont Chapter member Ron Redner. A fitting and challenging goal of planting 250 Liberty Trees across the nation by July 2026 was set. With the help of SAR members across the nation, the goal to reach 250 trees was met and exceeded in May 2026! The number of trees planted continues to grow.
The original Liberty Tree (1646-1775) was an elm tree that stood in Boston near the Boston Common in the years before the American Revolution. At this tree, in 1765, colonists in Boston staged the first act of defiance against the British government in protest of the Stamp Act. The tree became a rallying point for the growing resistance to the rule of Britain over the American colonies.

SAR Piedmont Chapter member Doctor Tom Price helped get the modern-day program off the ground in 2018 by sponsoring the first Liberty Tree in the Roswell area, planted at Milton City Hall. Tom was recently instrumental in providing key contacts needed to plant three Liberty Trees at Minute Man National Park in Lincoln, Massachusetts on May 2, 2026. The trees were dedicated to the three midnight riders Paul Revere, William Dawes, and Samuel Precott who, on the night of April 18-19, 1775, spread the word across the countryside about the impending arrival of British troops. The battle that occurred on April 19, 1775, in Lexington and Concord became the, “Shot heard ‘round the world.”
