Spoken-Word Artists Take The Stage at Roswell Poetry Slam

ROSWELL, GA -- The popular Slammin' in the Suburbs poetry slam will return to the city of Roswell.

These talented artists will take the stage at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23 at the Roswell Historic Cottage, which his at 972 Alpharetta Street.

The free event will be hosted by Theresa Davis, one of Atlanta's well known performance poets.

In 2011, Davis won the title of Women of the World Poetry Slam Champion. She holds the 2012 title of The City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs Emerging Artist Award, held the McEver Chair at Georgia Tech University, and was a participant in the TEDx Talk for Georgia Tech.

This is Roswell’s 13th annual poetry slam, which allows poets to perform their work and are judged by members of the audience on content and performance. The event includes an invitational round of competition with some of the region’s best spoken-word artists. A $1,000 cash first-place prize will be awarded.

The doors will open at 6 p.m. Limited spots will be available for amateur poets to enter the competition. The Slam rules will be explained by Davis before the competition begins. Each poem must be of the poet’s own creation, and props and musical accompaniment are prohibited.

Roswell Roots: A Festival of Black History and Culture is one of the largest and most comprehensive celebrations of black history and culture in the Southeast.

This year, there will be 23 different events throughout the month of February, ranging from music and art exhibitions to demonstrations and poetry. The festival continues to grow and was honored with the “Gold Award for Best Cultural Event” by the Southeast Festival and Events Association in 2014.
