Two Dogs Rescued From Hot Car In Roswell; Owner Charged With Animal Cruelty

Officers and firefighters were called to the scene July 2 by a concerned citizen. The temperature inside the car reached 167 degrees.

ROSWELL, GA -- Public safety personnel in Roswell came to the rescue of two pups trapped inside a hot vehicle over the 4th of July weekend. Officers and firefighters were dispatched to the parking lot of Studio Movie Grill at 2880 Holcomb Bridge Road around 3:57 p.m. July 2.

The incident was captured on body camera video recorded by the responding officer. On the video, the woman who placed the call to 911 said she was "sorry about this," but the officer reiterated to the citizen that she did the right thing. When asked if she needed to stay, the officer told the resident that she welcome to leave.

"Believe me, you have my commitment we're going to take care of it," the officer adds.

"This dog has been in here for over an hour," the officer said.

The video shows one dog relentlessly barking and whining, which the department said was due to it becoming aggressive and fearful from the heat. Officers soon discovered a second dog, which had crawled under the front seat to escape direct sunlight beaming into the vehicle.

That dog came out to protect the first dog that was being removed using a catch pole, the agency added. The first dog removed from the car suffered a heat-related seizure, and Roswell fire crews provided water to help cool off the pup.

The dog can be seen on the video yelping, screeching and falling over on to the pavement.

"Jesus Christ!," the officer said.

The owner of the dog finally arrives after emergency pages were dispatched inside the movie theater.

"What happened to him?" the woman, carrying one of the pups in her arms, asks as she approaches the fire truck where the male pup is having water splashed onto his body.

"He was left in a hot car," the officer standing next to the owner retorts.

Roswell officers told the woman that the dogs were inside the vehicle for more than an hour, and asked if she had been outside to check on them since arriving at the establishment. She notes she had not been outside to check on the pups since going inside.

"I think that we got here just in time to safe these animals' lives," the officer said.

"Well, I definitely appreciate you guys," she added.

Roswell police charged the owner with two counts of animal cruelty. Both pups were transported to an emergency animal hospital where they were treated and released.
