Don't Work Out. Practice!

No one can afford to be out of commission for a day due to injury from exercising. Years ago, "no pain, no gain" was a badge proudly worn. We felt like failures if we didn't "feel the burn." But research shows that a "burn" isn't the best goal!
Not only is it not a goal, but it's also a waste of precious time. No one ever seems to have extra time. We own businesses, have jobs, kids, maybe grandkids, spouses, meetings. Maybe our parents need our help now, too. We are stretched pretty thin. So we can't waste time on fitness that makes us miserable, slows us down, and doesn't give us the biggest return on our investment.
What kind of fitness does? The kind you approach as a "practice" where you pay attention and work to improve. Studies now show that if you are not mentally engaged with what you are doing physically, you are missing as much as 30% of your workout! 30%. So doing the grocery list or reviewing a presentation while you bang out reps is actually inefficient. You can get sore banging out reps, but it doesn't mean you recruited the maximum tissue, or even the right tissue. It usually means you worked one muscle at the expense of the others. We need to get as much tissue in the game as we can. The more we recruit, the bigger the payoff.
