District 3 Special Election Set For May 24
The election will fill the seat vacated by Sandy Springs City Councilman Graham McDonald.

SANDY SPRINGS, GA -- Sandy Springs citizens residing in District 3 will soon have their say on who will be their next representative on the City Council.

That's because the Sandy Springs City Council has voted to hold a special election on Tuesday, May 24 to fill the seat, which was vacated by former Council member Graham McDonald when he qualified to run for the House District 52 seat.
Only voters in District 3 can cast ballots in this election. Qualifying for this election will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 13 and Thursday, April 14; and from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, April 15.

Qualifying will take place in the office of the Sandy Springs City Clerk, which is located at City Hall at 7840 Roswell Road Building 500 (citizens can use the main Main/Finance entrance).

Candidates must file a Notice of Candidacy and Affidavit by 12:30 p.m. April 15, 2016, to have their name on the special election ballot. The qualifying fee is 3 percent of the annual salary for a council member, or $540, and must be paid by cash or a check made payable to the city of Sandy Springs.
Residents can obtain an election information packet at Sandy Springs City Hall in the office of the city clerk.
Qualifications to fill the District 3 seat include: being a registered voter in Sandy Springs;a 12-month resident of Sandy Springs; a 6-month resident of District 3; and residing in that district during that person’s period of service.
This is a non-partisan election, and the candidate who wins will serve out the unexpired term until the 2017 general election.
Citizens who live District 3 and wish to vote in this special election must be registered to vote by April 26, 2016. The Fulton County Department of Registration and Elections Voter Division handles voter registration for all Fulton County residents, regardless of the city or unincorporated area where a person resides.
A person must be registered as a resident within the area in which he or she intends to vote and must be registered 29 days prior to the election date.
Because this special election falls outside the 90-day advance notice period required by state code, voting in the special election will take place in the Round Program Building at Hammond Park, located at 6005 Glenridge Drive.
Residents should note that voting for the state's May 24 general primary will be held in the polling locations designated on the voting registration cards issued by Fulton County. That primary election includes the selection of State Court judges, Fulton County School Board representatives, county commissioners and tax commissioner.
Advance voting will be held at the Fulton County North Fulton Annex, located at 7741 Roswell Road in Sandy Springs.
